Have you ever looked at google or maybe yahoo and wonder why you can get on the first page? If you answered yes, then SEO (Search Engine Optimization) may be the answer or the problem rather. With all the sites out there competing for the top spots for just about every keyword you may find it to be a daunting task.
What is SEO?
Search engine optimization is the art of designing your website so that search engines like you and will rank you higher in the listings. Let’s look at the basics starting with the title tag. Open up you home page in your website editor and look at the top of the page and find the title tag < title> your title < /title>. Now you will here lots of different theories about what should be here. So I here is my opinion. It is not necessary to include your title in the tag, but I would just put it at the end of the tag. You title tag should look something like this.
< title> Keyword phrase Keyword phrase Keyword phrase, your sites title < /title>
This will provide keyword rich text for search engine and help internet surfers find you a bit easier.
Now let’s discuss meta tags.
While not as important as they once were they are still an important piece of the puzzle.
Just below the title tag you should see some Meta tags that look like this.
< META name=”Keywords” content=”Keyword keyword keyword keyword keyword keyword keyword”>
< META name=”Description” content=”Put a keyword rich description of your site here”>
< META name=”Robots” content=”INDEX,FOLLOW”>
The Robot tag will tell a search engine if it is allowed or not allowed to crawl a specific page. The above example allows search engines to crawl at will, if you want to stop a search engine from crawling a page simply change the FOLLOW TO NOFOLLOW.
SEO can seem overwhelming at first but is actually quite simple. In fact it can be one of the easiest things you do for your website.
